Description

75 Tele-snaps for Episode 14 of Thunderbirds, "The Mighty Atom"

-SYNOPSIS-

“Attempting to film secrets of an automatic irrigation plant in eastern Australia, the Hood is caught up in a gun battle. A stray bullet causes a fire which eventually results in the explosion of the nuclear reactor. The resulting atomic cloud drifts towards Melbourne, but a strong wind fortunately blows the cloud away.

One year later, a second station is opened in the Sahara Desert. The Hood steals an amazing surveillance device from a research unit: “The Mighty Atom”. Looking to all intents and purposes like a small mouse, this device can penetrate installations undetected and photograph control systems by focusing on the technicians’ faces as they monitor the control panels. The Hood uses the device to photograph the control room of the new plant, and then sets off a fire in the manner of the one at the Australian plant. He plans to lure International Rescue and use the Mighty Atom to photograph the control cabins of the International Rescue craft.

Having previously witnessed the disaster at the Australian plant, Reactor Commander Wade recognizes the nature of the fire and immediately calls International Rescue. Scott sets off in Thunderbird 1 and Lady Penelope, holidaying on Tracy Island, begs Jeff to let her go along on the mission. She joins Virgil and Gordon in Thunderbird 2. With only twenty minutes before the reactor goes critical, Virgil drops Gordon in Thunderbird 4. He must block the sea water intake at precisely the right moment or the reactor will explode. Virgil leaves Lady Penelope in Thunderbird 2 as he and Scott don protective suits and enter the control room to push the reactor rods back into place. Gordon destroys the sea water intake with Thunderbird 4’s missiles and the reactor shuts down safely.

Meanwhile, the Hood has sent the Mighty Atom into Thunderbird 2 to photograph the controls, but he is furious when he later discovers that the robotic mouse has instead taken pictures of Lady Penelope screaming at it! In anger, the Hood destroys the device.”

-NOTES-

This was the hardest episode to snap so far. Not only is it a very interesting story, about a robot mouse that takes photographs, it's also the ONLY episode of the series to feature all five Thunderbird machines and ALL the main characters of the show, including The Hood. I doubt I'm gonna find another episode out of the remaining 18 episodes as tough as this one!

This is one of my favourite episodes. I remember it mainly for the mouse and that music.

The opening is pretty unsettling. As Terror in New York City, predated 9/11, then The Mighty Atom predated Chernobyl.

Incredible how they got all five machines and every character into the same episode. The closest afterwards may have been four machines in one episode. Cry Wolf and Danger at Ocean Deep could be two other episodes to have featured all 5 vehicles (you'd think TB4 would have been shown amongst the pod vehicles in the former and used in the latter).
